Goals:
|

 |

|
- To provide enrichment
experiences in research and critical-thinking skills to better
prepare SEPA Scholars for scientific study and research.
- To encourage SEPA Scholars to
attend college and pursue a science track that will lead to a
graduate degree in the biomedical sciences.
- To stimulate an interest in
careers in biomedical sciences and in the health professions.

Objectives: |

- To assign each SEPA Scholar a
research mentor who will provide guidance, training, support and
assistance with assigned research project.
- To provide activities which will
enhance each SEPA Scholar's overall academic performance and
interest in the science track.
- To improve the SEPA Scholars’
scientific reading comprehension, oral and written
communication, and critical thinking skills through library
assignments, weekly journal club meeting, opportunities for
paper/poster presentations, and weekly data analysis sessions
with research mentor.
- To provide the SEPA Scholars
with role models in the biomedical science and health-related
professions through varied interactions with research scholars.

|
The SEPA summer
research program incorporates various activities designed to
stimulate and encourage students’ interest in the biomedical
sciences and the health-related professions. The program includes
laboratory research experiences, exposure to state-of-the-art
research facilities, interactions with research scientists, training
in laboratory safety and research ethics, training in oral and
written presentation skills, and enhancement of critical thinking
skills. The summer research program will begin on June 2, 2009 and
end on July 25, 2009. |

Requirements: |

 |
|
|
- Rising High School Senior:
ACT score of 20 or above and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
- High School Transcripts
- Three letters of recommendation
from principal and science teachers
